Modular course design for unit controllers in thermal generation

Background

CS Energy engaged Thomson Bridge to develop an Operations Training Program module for the condensate system at Callide C Power Station. This module was well received by the Operations Group and management, setting the scene and offering a process template for a larger project to upgrade the full Operations training program from Power Station fundamentals to Panel Operations at CS  Energy’s Kogan Creek power station.

CS Energy seeks to update the Kogan Creek Operator training material in order to:

  1. Improve the quality and consistency of the Operations training and assessment material;
  2. Make greater use of the simulator in developing and maintaining skills through targeted scenario development; and
  3. Ensure the Kogan Creek Operations training and assessment materials reflect industry best practice for plant operations training and assessment.

Our Role

Develop curriculum and courseware for the Operator Training Program contextualised for the equipment and the operational parameters and assessment processes and documentation for Plant operations role training at the Kogan Creek Power Station. Using our digitally native engineering trained instructional designers to build learning tools supported by the experience and knowledge of Thomson Bridges’s power station trainers and the Kogan Creek operations group technical experts.

Our team had to work effectively with time-poor subject matter experts at site to ensure all new materials were reviewed and approved as they were developed. We know Operations groups at power stations want high quality training materials, because they recognise the link to high performing operations groups, and the right decisions under pressure

Thomson Bridge has developed and refined a best practice Operations training pathway through thei project. This pathway has been benchmarked across the industry and aligns broadly to relevant national qualifications. It covers pre-foundation modules through to panel operations and shift management, identifying key skills and knowledge requirements for each stage. The pathway sets clear foundational knowledge and effectively and sequentially builds knowledge towards power station operations expertise.

Project Details

  1. Overview: Create updated modular training material to maintain and upskill operators and new workers and facilitate more valuable training experiences from Kogan Creek's power station training simulator.
  2. Outcome: The pathway sets clear foundational knowledge and effectively and sequentially builds knowledge towards power station operations expertise.
